How’s Your Mental Health...Really?

5 Honest Questions Every Coach Needs to Ask

frustration

Coaching isn’t just a job. It’s a calling.

It’s also a pressure cooker. Wins and losses. Player expectations. Parent emails.

Administration demands. And on top of that? The personal voice inside your head that asks, “Am I enough?”

If you're feeling drained, distracted, or just not yourself, you’re not weak; you’re human.

Below are five questions I’ve shared with our coaching community that might help you stay grounded, focused, and healthy through the grind.

1. Do You Know Your Warning Signs?

Before burnout fully sets in, your body and brain will send signals.

Look out for:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Emotional numbness • Sleeplessness
  • Loss of motivation

If you’ve felt off for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust. A friend. A counselor. A fellow coach. You can’t lead well if you don’t feel well.

2. Do You Make Space for Stillness?

Coaches give their energy to everyone - players, staff, parents, and community.

But you need time where no one is asking for anything.

Even 15 minutes a day can change everything:

  • Deep breathing
  • Prayer or reflection
  • Sitting in silence

Mental recovery is just as important as physical recovery.

3. Do You Protect Your Identity?

Here’s the truth: You are NOT your win-loss record.

If your self-worth is anchored only in performance, you’re on an emotional rollercoaster. Build your identity in something deeper:

  • Faith
  • Purpose
  • Core values
  • The lives you're impacting

Your role is what you do - not who you are.

4. Do You Create Boundaries?

You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to say “no.”

And you are allowed to stop replying to messages after a set time each night.

Try setting:

  • A hard stop time each evening
  • Limits on your availability
  • One day off where you don’t talk sports

Burnout isn’t a badge of honor. It’s a warning light.

5. Do You Talk to Other Coaches?

Stop managing your image. Start building connection.

Find two or three coaches you trust. Text them. Call them. Be honest.

Sometimes venting is all you need to clear the mental fog. Sometimes your story will help someone else who’s struggling quietly too.

Vulnerability is strength. You don’t have to do it alone.

At CoachLync, we’re building more than a marketplace; we’re building a community. A place where coaches share their systems, resources, and support. We believe the best coaches don’t just guard what they know; they give it away. And that includes wisdom about how to survive the pressure.
